About the artist

Fuer Panda first picked up a spray can in 2000 and began experimenting with stencils. Going under various pseudonyms Fuer Panda moved into freehand spraycan art, experimenting with New York inspired letterforms. Geting-up in London meant simplifying letterforms for speed and legibility. Fuer Panda has since gone international making panda-shaped impressions in the system.

Is the panda street art or is it graphic design?

The panda has been described by some as street art and others as graphic design. It has also been confused as advertising and even graffiti. One sure thing about the panda is that it overlaps all of these areas.

The panda was originally created early on during the pandemic (pandademic) to bring a smile to the people of London. Pandas have since decorated the streets of Hong Kong, Tokyo, Taipei, Seoul, Manila, Paris, Barcelona, Athens, Lisbon, Porto, Kraków, Riga, Larnaca and home of street art: Bristol.

Life for the panda started off as a wheatpaste as it was easy to get up in volume. Since then the pandas have improved in longevity by being placed higher and executed in tile or painted form.

The rectangle shape from the original wheatpaste often remains in the paintings for it’s visibility and recognisability.

The project was never about commerce, but after many requests it made sense to make the designs available to the public through the means of apparel and artwork.
